Drunk cop kills lover, shoots colleagues

MANILA, Philippines - An intoxicated policeman allegedly killed his 16-year-old live-in partner and shot two policemen who pursued him at around midnight in Quezon City yesterday.

Senior Police Officer 1 Hassan Baharan, 49, was also killed in the shootout with his colleagues Police Officer 2 Joaquin Angid and Police Officer 2 Ayub Abdullah, both assigned to the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 3.

Angid died upon arrival at the Lanting General Hospital while Abdullah remains confined at the East Avenue Medical Center.

QCPD-Station 3 commander Superintendent Alex Sintin said Baharan knew Angid and Abdullah, as he was once assigned to the same station but was detailed with the National Capital Region Police Office’s holding area unit.

Chief Inspector Benjamin Elenzano, head of the QCPD’s Homicide Investigation Section, said the gunbattle happened as a result of Baharan’s killing his 16-year-old live-in partner, Nina Ramos.

Case investigator Police Officer 2 Norlan Margallo said the couple was at the wake of Ramos’ relative in Barangay Baesa when Baharan started accosting people engaged in gambling in the area.

Ramos tried to pacify her partner but Baharan vented his anger towards the teenager. He pulled out a .45 caliber handgun and shot Ramos in the head.

Baharan then put on his police uniform and commandeered a tricycle, fleeing towards Tandang Sora Avenue with the driver of the vehicle still on board. Village watchmen went after him.

Angid and Abdullah were on patrol when they noticed the chase along Tandang Sora Avenue. They joined the chase and managed to corner the tricycle. When Baharan alighted from the vehicle, he shot at the two lawmen.

Though wounded, the two policemen traded shots with Baharan and managed to hit him. Bystanders Rodito Santos and Romeo Abueva were hit by stray bullets.

QCPD officials are recommending the granting of a posthumous award to Angid and a spot promotion for Abdullah.
