MPD heightens security for global migration forum

The Manila Police District (MPD) has prepared an elaborate security plan for 1,500 foreign delegates to the 2nd Global Forum on Migration Development and Human Rights to be held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City from Oct. 27 to 30.

National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Jefferson Soriano personally assessed Manila’s commercial districts last Wednesday and issued guidelines to MPD director Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales for the successful staging of the event.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is expected to attend the GFMDH.

Rosales said at least 20 policemen shall be posted at every hotel in Manila, complemented by a round-the-clock patrol of patrol cars. Police assistance desks shall also be placed in hotels to receive complaints directly from the guests and spare them the hassle of going to the police stations.

Rosales instructed licensed money exchange shop operators to report to the police the presence of members of syndicates shortchanging patrons.

Bar and restaurant owners were reminded to be aware of their employees who pad the bills of foreigners.

Senior Superintendent Miguel Laurel, the MPD’s chief of directorial staff, has ordered the 11 police station commanders to remove eyesores, beggars and “rugby boys,” children who sniff model airplane glue, in their areas of jurisdiction. — Nestor Etolle
