Off-duty cop nabs teen rob suspect

An off-duty Manila policeman arrested a teenaged robbery suspect who was allegedly robbing passengers of a Divisoria-bound jeepney past midnight yesterday in Binondo, Manila.

Police Officer 2 Angelito David, detailed at the Manila police’s District Tactical Operations Center, personally surrendered the 17-year-old suspect to Superintendent Nelson Yabut of the Meisic police station. A empty .38 caliber revolver was recovered from the boy.

According to Yabut, David was on his way home when three youths boarded the jeepney along Liwasang Bonifacio.

David told Yabut that two of the youths probably sensed that he is a policeman, despite his being in civilian attire, as the two immediately got off and left their companion behind.

As the vehicle reached Escolta the suspect pulled out a gun and robbed the jeepney’s three passengers. David then pulled out his service pistol and introduced himself as a police officer. The boy surrendered and David later learned that the gun was not loaded. The victims recovered their possessions from the suspect.

The boy was brought to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, where he was found to be under the influence of liquor.

Charges of robbery-holdup and illegal possession of firearm were filed against the suspect, even as he was remanded to the Manila Youth Rehabilitation Center. – Nestor Etolle
