Homeless man with P.2-M savings stabbed dead

A 69-year-old man who had been sleeping on the sidewalk and working as a shoe shine boy in Binondo, Manila for the past 10 years was found dead from stab wounds yesterday morning.

Senior Police Officer 2 Dennis Paul Javier said Margarito Figueras, alias “Bay,” had been dead for about six hours when he was found by Marcelo Fabio, 53, a family driver.

Figueras’ body was still under a mosquito net on the sidewalk, and Javier said the victim may have woken up just as his attacker was going through his possessions.

The police said Figueras may have recognized his attacker. His bag was found open, and contained two passbooks – one for a P58,000 savings account and the other for a P158,000 time deposit account at PSBank – under his name.

Barangay 292, Zone 28 watchman Reynaldo Rivera said Figueras was a good man and had no known enemies.

According to reports, Figueras was badly beaten up by a robber five years ago.
