A 30-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car driven by an off-duty policeman while crossing the street with her baby Wednesday night in Malate, Manila.
However, Jocelyn Domingo of San Andres, Malate, reportedly managed to throw her 10-month-old baby boy Karl Williams onto the center island before she was run over.
Investigation conducted by SPO3 Mario Jorge showed that at around 7:30 p.m. Domingo, with the baby in her arms, was crossing the intersection of President Quirino and Taft Avenues when a fast approaching Toyota Fortuner (ZMC-591) came their way. Jorge said Domingo managed to throw her baby before the vehicle came crashing on her.
The mother and the baby were rushed to the Ospital ng Maynila, where Domigo died while being treated. The baby survived with only minor injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, Police Officer 2 Reynaldo Ortiz, 35, assigned to the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame, surrendered to authorities.
Ortiz is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries. – Nestor Etolle
