The Makati City police has arrested 19 abusive taxi drivers during the past few days under the “Oplan Isnaberong Tsuper” campaign.
Makati police chief Superintendent Gilbert Cruz said entrapment operations were conducted in response to the public’s complaints against taxi drivers who refuse passengers and charge extra or fixed amounts of fares.
Cruz said 19 were apprehended and fined for violating rules and regulations strictly implemented in the country’s financial and business capital.
Mayor Jejomar Binay commended the Makati police for undertaking the operation, noting that public utility drivers should not be abusive and subjective in providing service to passengers.
“We will not tolerate abusive and snobbish taxi drivers in Makati. Taxis are public utility vehicles and, as such, they must be fair in their dealings with the public,” he said. Penalties for violators include confiscation of their license and issuance of Ordinance Violation Receipts with a P1,000 fine. – Michael Punongbayan
