Wayward jeepney rams eatery; 1 dead, 2 hurt

A wayward passenger jeepney plowed into a roadside eatery the other day, killing one man and injuring two others in Marikina City.

Deomides Moises, 58, of Barangay Barangka sustained severe head and body injuries after being pinned underneath the jeepney and dragged for several meters.

He died while being rushed to the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Hospital.

Two others, identified as Maricel Briones, 26, and Ricky Geronimo, 32, sustained injuries after being hit and are being treated at the same hospital.

The driver of the jeepney, identified as Mauro Regidor, 31, of Barangay Cupang in Antipolo City, surrendered to police.

Police said Moises and Briones were waiting for a ride to Cubao in Quezon City near a food stall in Barangay Calumpang when they were hit by the jeepney at about 7 p.m.

Regidor told police that his vehicle (TWJ 910) lost its brakes. To avoid hitting other vehicles as his jeepney hurtled downward on Bonifacio Road, Regidor maneuvered toward the eatery on the side of the road. The vehicle, however, failed to stop and hit Moises and Briones who were standing on the sidewalk.

Geronimo was having a snack when he was hit by the vehicle.

Police said Moises was dragged for several meters. The vehicle eventually came to a stop after hitting a fire hydrant.

Bystanders rushed the injured to the nearest hospital.

Police are readying charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple frustrated homicide and damage to property against Regidor. — Non Alquitran
