Mother, daughter killed in Makati fire

A mother and her eight-year-old daughter died after they were trapped inside a burning house in Barangay Palanan, Makati City before dawn yesterday,

The fatalities were identified as Jane Baylon, 31, and her daughter Iris, whose charred bodies were recovered by firefighters on the second floor of their two-storey house at 5324 Diesel street.

The Makati Fire Department (MFD) said the fire started at the first floor of the house at around 4:19 a.m.

The fire, which reached second alarm, was likely caused by a candle left burning on an altar near the wooden staircase that led to the second floor of the house.

Baylon’s husband Erwin and their three other children, along with helper Jessie Banderas, survived after jumping out of the burning house in time.

The mother and her daughter were left behind and could not be reached by rescuers.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and were able to put out the fire more than an hour later at around 5:35 a.m.

Fire Officer 2 Wilfredo Nardo and Fire Officer 3 Francisco Sergio are leading the investigation of the incident.
