Militant groups to stage rally in front of MMDA

Police appealed to members of militant transport groups yesterday to observe the provision of their permit when they stage a rally today in front the office of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in Makati City.

Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay has issued a permit to drivers and operators of public utility vehicles belonging to the Pinag-Isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operaytors Nationwide (PISTON) to hold a rally in front of the MMDA office at Orense St., Guadalupe from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Senior Superintendent Felipe Rojas Jr., intelligence chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), said they would be closely monitoring the rally.

Various transport groups are set to stage a nationwide strike today to protest MMDA’s new ticketing scheme. But transport leaders called off the mass actions after Malacañang intervened Saturday and asked the MMDA to implement the old ticketing system, which calls for the confiscation of license and the issuance of a ticket to erring motorists.

The MMDA is pushing for the implementation of the Metropolitan Traffic Ticket scheme and the No Contact Traffic Apprehension program.

Transport groups claimed that the MMDA is presently implementing the new ticketing scheme despite an injunction issued by the Makati City Regional Trial Court (RTC). — Non Alquitran
