QC declared RP’s ICT capital

The Quezon City council recently approved a resolution declaring the city as the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capital of the Philippines.

The city’s new title under the administration of Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. was contained in a resolution authored by Councilor Julian Coseteng, the chairman of the committee on trade and industry.

Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista, majority leader Ariel Inton and Quezon City Chamber of Industry (QCCCI) foundation chairman Nathan Zulueta have backed the measure.

Zulueta said the city’s new title would be the main theme of its 66th foundation anniversary activities on Oct. 12 in recognition of the tremendous growth of the Information and Communications Technology industry in the city. The resolution declaring the city as the country’s ICT capital was pushed because of the industry’s potential in providing jobs for the city’s young professionals, especially in the contact centers and business process outsourcing sectors.

Citing records from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), Zulueta said Quezon City has the biggest number of accredited IT buildings. It has 17 to date and five more applications are being processed. More than 60 ICT locators are now hosted by the city. — Perseus Echeminada
