Army man killed in KTV bar shooting

A 21-year-old Army reservist was killed while a bystander was wounded when a drunken policeman shot them during an altercation over a guest relations officer at a KTV bar in Marikina City last Sunday.

Ryan Caranto, a reservist of the Philippine Army at Fort Bonifacio, was hit in the chest and left shoulder. He was declared dead on arrival at the SDS Medical Center.

Bystander Richard Tan, 20, of Concepion Uno, was hit in the right chest. He is now fighting for his life at the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center.

Superintendent Manuel Gaerlan, Marikina City police chief, ordered the arrest of the suspect, PO1 Joel Cadano, assigned at the Police Community Precinct in Conception Dos.

Analyn Roquero, 20, the cashier of the Kilpatrick KTV bar located along Farmers 1, Tumana, Concepcion Uno, claimed that Cadano and SPO1 Ernie Aglipay, the morning shift desk officer of the local police, arrived at about 10 p.m. Sunday, already reeking of liquor.

Caranto, on the other hand, was with eight fellow reservists seated on a long table.

While ordering beer, Aglipay asked a GRO to sit beside him, but the woman politely turned him down, saying she was attending to another customer.

An incensed Aglipay then pushed the woman, who fell to the floor.

One of Caranto’s companions stood up and tried to pacify Aglipay, but he too was shoved aside.

"Walang sundalo-sundalo sa akin. Gusto ninyo tapusin na natin ito," Aglipay shouted at the group of reservists.

At the height of a shouting exchange, Cadano pulled out his service pistol and opened fire at the victims, hitting Caranto and Tan.

However, a police report revealed that Cadano was responding to a call for help in the area when he got entangled in a quarrel with the Army reservists. Roquero and several other witnesses stood by their story.

Cadano faces homicide and frustrated homicide charges. Non Alquitran
