Valenzuela lawyer survives slay try

A 47-year-old lawyer survived a slay attempt by two motorcycle-riding men by expertly maneuvering his vehicle in the middle of a traffic jam last Thursday night in Valenzuela City.

Cenon Malabanan of Barangay Karuhatan, Valenzuela City, is now recuperating at the Our Lady of Fatima Hospital from to a single gunshot wound in the left shoulder.

Police said the attempt on Malabanan occurred along Gov. Santiago street near the Cellu Plaza shopping center in Barangay Malanday at around 7 p.m.

The victim, who was driving a white Nissan Patrol (XVM 777), was on Gov. Santiago street when a motorcycle without license plates approached the left side of Malabanan’s vehicle.

One of the suspects pulled out a handgun and fired at the lawyer hitting him once in the left shoulder.

Despite the wound, the lawyer managed to elude the gunmen by skillfully maneuvering his car in heavy traffic until he reached Fatima hospital.

The suspects tried to pursue the victim, but decided to call it off because of the heavy traffic. They fled toward Barangay Rincon, police said.

The victim’s brother, an official of the city’s sports development agency, reported the incident to the city police half an hour later.

A follow-up operation was immediately launched by the local police but to no avail. – Pete La
