Fire hits Intramuros

Fire struck a squatter colony in Intramuros, Manila shortly after midnight yesterday destroying some 1,500 homes and leaving thousands homeless.

Two people were reportedly hurt in the blaze. Damage to property was pegged at P1.5 million.

Arson investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire but initial investigation showed that the fire started at the house of one Oscar Alano, but it is still being confirmed as of press time.

The fire swiftly spread to other houses as narrow passageways made it difficult for firefighters to reach deep into the compound.

According to the Manila Fire Department, the fire broke out at 12:14 a.m. at Purok 1 in Maestranza Compound in Intramuros. It was put out by firefighters only at around 6:58 a.m.

The historic Intramuros is home to several communities, mostly informal settlers.

The two persons who suffered minor injuries during the seven-hour blaze were identified as Rowena Alvarez, 7, and Dennis Lopez, 26. Alvarez suffered first degree burns all over the body while Lopez had lacerations.

The victims were brought to nearby hospitals for treatment while the displaced families were given temporary shelter by the city government.
