Navotas still Metro’s greenest, cleanest

The coastal town of Navotas has made it again as Metro Manila’s cleanest and greenest.

The "Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran" for 2003 was awarded by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) jointly with the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Health (DOH), Tourism (DOT), the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and REACT Philippines.

"I would like to congratulate all Navoteños for their concern in the quality of environment in which they live. No clean and green project would ever succeed if the people were not a hundred percent behind it," Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco said.

Tiangco said the town of about a quarter of a million people last received the coveted award in 2001. The awards committee gave the recognition to the town for consistently conforming with the objectives for a disciplined, self-reliant people and for a healthy and safe environment.

Navotas received a trophy from President Arroyo, P200,000 in the form of a community project and a special recognition certificate in ceremonies held at the Orchidarium in Luneta Park, Manila last Sunday.Jerry Botial
