QC launches Sagip Batis 2

As part of flooding control measures and maintaining a healthy environment, the Quezon City government is set to launch "Sagip Batis 2," a major clean-up and declogging of the city’s 41 rivers and waterways.

In a report to Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Frederico Rentoy, chief of the city’s environmental protection and waste management office, said the clean-up operation will involve a more active participation by barangay residents.

Last year’s Sagip Batis proved to be highly effective in reducing the floodings in the city during the rainy season.

The clearing of the city’s waterways initially involved 1,000 volunteers, assisted by personnel of the Metro Manila Development Authority.

Major waterways, including the clogged San Juan River, were cleared in a two-month period last year.

Apart from Sagip Batis, the city government has launched a massive information drive on solid waste management and an anti-smoke belching campaign.

"We will be conducting a door-to door-campaign for our environment education program," Rentoy said. – Perseus Echeminada
