LRTA extends train operations

Operation of the LRT 1 trains will be extended by 30 minutes from Dec. 20 to Dec. 24 to accommodate the expected increase in passenger during the holiday season, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) said yesterday.

"It is during the five days before Christmas when there is normally a surge in passenger traffic, LRTA administrator Teddy Cruz Jr. said.

He said the last Monumento-bound train will leave at 9:30 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. while the last Baclaran-bound train will leave at 10 p.m. instead of 9:30 p.m. The first southbound and northbound trips start at 5 a.m.

Cruz said the LRTA will take advantage of the Christmas vacation to conduct pre-installation works for the new air-conditioning units in the old fleet and other related maintenance activities to ensure the safety of the system.

Passenger volume this Christmas season is expected to hit 400,000 a day.
