2 inmates bolt Pasay City jail

Two inmates bolted the Pasay City jail yesterday morning, the second jailbreak to occur in the facility in less than a month, officials said.

Jail warden Senior Superintendent Augusto Retumban, who assumed the post barely two weeks ago, is in danger of being relieved from his post because of the latest incident which occurred at around 8 a.m.

Retumban was appointed Pasay City jail warden after his predecessor, Chief Inspector Isagani Gamino, was relieved by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), for the escape of 16 inmates last April 29.

Jail officials identified the latest escapees as Wilfredo Leonzanida, 35, detained for robbery charges; and Juancho Gutierrez, 31, detained for illegal possession of deadly weapon and assault charges.

Investigation showed that the two inmates, detained at a corner cell at the jail building’s third floor, helped each other saw off the iron grills of a cell window. – Rainier Allan Ronda
