Cop killed in road mishap

CEBU, Philippines - A policeman who was on his way home to Lapu-Lapu City after attending classes Tuesday afternoon died after getting bumped by a Kaohsiung bus.

SPO1 Edison Gumbay of Bougainvilla Village in Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City was heading home at around 5:30 pm when he was allegedly hit by a Kaohsiung bus driven by Bernalito Panginahug, 43, of barangay Mambaling, Cebu City.

Police said Gumbay and Panginahug were traveling along M.C. Briones highway and headed in the same direction when their vehicles made contact.

The motorcycle bounced off the bus, with Gumbay sustaining severe injuries on his head. His helmet and the motorcycle were found several meters away from the bus.

Gumbay was taken to the Mandaue City Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Traffic investigator SPO4 Eleazar Saromines said the bus driver has vehemently denied hitting the motorcycle.

Saromines said he can’t tell yet who was at fault since no witness has come forward to shed light on the incident.

However, charges will still be filed against the bus driver who is currently detained at the Subangdaku police station. He will have to prove his innocence in court, Saromines said. – (FREEMAN)
