Mandaue City councilor seeks more perks for village watchmen

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City councilor Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon, through a proposed ordinance, seeks additional benefits for barangay tanods and their beneficiaries.

At present, tanods can claim assistance from the national government through the Department of Interior and Local Government for accidental, dismemberment, and burial expenses.

Ouano’s proposal states that in cases of death, beneficiaries of the barangay tanod who died as a result of an accident while in the performance of his duty shall received a P10,000 for accidental death. For dismemberment as a result of an accident while in the performance of duty, P5,000. This particular assistance shall be availed of only once a year.

The beneficiaries of the duly appointed barangay tanod who may have died as a result of an accident while in the performance of his duty shall receive additional burial assistance of P2,500.

Barangays will be mandated to submit updated records of all barangay tanods to the Liga ng mga Barangay office.

“Whereas in the spirit of volunteerism and unwavering concern for the community, the barangay tanods of Mandaue City deserve to be recognized and honored through the grant of additional benefits,” Ouano-Dizon’s draft ordinance states.

The proposed ordinance was approved on first reading yesterday. — (FREEMAN)
