CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza has urged all barangay captains in Lapu-lapu City to strictly implement the solid waste segregation program in their respective barangays.
Radaza during yesterday’s re-orientation seminar on Solid Waste Management, said that the implementation of waste segregation in the city should be fully implemented as it is one way to entice more tourists to come to Lapu-lapu city as tourism is the island’s major industry.
Radaza said that the Solid Waste Management Program of the city was implemented in 1990 yet but could not be perfected as the city has grown and become progressive.
The mayor sees the need for the barangay chiefs to exert more efforts to maintain the city’s cleanliness as she assured that the city is always ready to help them.
She said it should not be the City Government alone that should do the clean-up drive as the barangay should also help. She said the City has provided the barangays with a clean and green personnel so there’s no reason for the barangays not to implement fully the Solid Waste Management Program.
She also told barangay captains to immediately report garbage trucks needing repairs. The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) could also be tapped to teach them waste segregation in their areas.
“Tap your barangay workers or even the residents to segregate their garbage and clean their surroundings. If monitored well, it will lessen your penalties,” Radaza told barangay captains.
Next month, Radaza will go to Germany with a councilor after being invited to study and learn on how to convert garbage into energy. It was also learned that there is an ongoing construction of an MRF at the Sta .Rosa island so that garbage from the island will no longer be transported to the mainland. (FREEMAN)
