Lapu heightens drive vs. illegal fishing

CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City Task Force Kalikasan has intensified its campaign against illegal fishing and other forms of destruction to environment through market denial.

The members of the task force - police personnel, City Hall personnel and selected representatives from different barangays – will undergo a seminar on this regard, which will be conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza is optimistic that the campaign will stop illegal fishing and other destruction of marine resources.

Last year, a number of fishermen were killed after they used dynamite and other types of illegal fishing paraphernalia.

With the reports, the Task Force Kalikasan conducted a surprise inspection at the city public market and asked the public not to patronize dynamited fish.

Aside from its campaign against illegal fishing, the Task Force Kalikasan has also intensified its campaign against extraction of Mactan Stone.

Some businessmen in neighboring cities allegedly transported Mactan Stone from Lapu-Lapu City even without the necessary permits from the Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau in Central Visayas.  (FREEMAN)
