New 105-classroom, 3-story building to rise in Mandaue

CEBU, Philippines - In response to the increasing population of students, a 105-classroom three-story building will soon rise at the existing Mandaue City Central School DepEd office.

The school building will form the letter "L", starting near the Catalino Ouano Street.

DepEd Mandaue administrative officer Benjamin Tiongson said the first phase of the project will be implemented by the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. under the Private-Public Partnership (PPP) program.

He said total cost of the three-story, six-classroom building project is P6.6 M with a 30 percent or P2M as city's counterpart.

The signing of a memorandum of agreement is expected to be signed next month, Tiongson said.

To solve the problem of classroom shortage, Mayor Jonas Cortes urged all principals in the city to make a short term and long term program for building more classrooms to maximize available lots which are becoming scarce and very expensive.

The mayor said his three major projects are the government center, education, and solid waste.

"Ako una gi-defer ang government center kay nakita nako nga mas importante ang classrooms, mas importante ang pagtubag sa problema sa basura karon (I have deferred the government center because I realized that classrooms and solving the problem of garbage are more important)," Cortes said.
