CEBU, Philippines - A suspected thief was shot dead yesterday dawn in sitio Mananga II, barangay Tabunok, Talisay City.
The police, as of press time, said the man's name was "Bukay," believed to be in his 30s, a resident of the place but a native of Negros Occidental.
Bukay, who earned a living by cooking "chicharon," sustained a single gunshot wound on the left side of his chest.
Members of the Talisay Rescue Emergency Action Team (TREAT) took him to the Talisay City District Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
SPO1 Mikie Espina, one of the investigators, said Bukay was known as a notorious thief in his neighborhood.
Bucay had been living in Mananga II on his own since he was 14, and that not one of his neighbors knew his real name.
Police believed Bukay, after pulling a robbery alone, was hunted down by his victim.
This theory came after neighbors said he was last seen being chased by an unidentified man while crossing the Mananga River. Neighbors said they heard 10 gunshots, and moments later Bukay was discovered lying in a pool of blood.
