Who’s your daddy?
MANILA, Philippines - After 25 years together designer Tom Ford and his partner, former WWD fashion editor Richard Buckley, finally welcomed a baby boy to the world last Sept. 23. Yes, we’re a bit late on the news — even Cathy Horyn was kept in the dark up until a few days ago — but it just appears as though Tom is being true to his word about keeping his would-be child hidden from the public eye. In an interview with Fern Mallis for her Fashion Icon lecture series, Tom said that if he were to have a child, “no one will ever see the child because I certainly wouldn’t use it as a press tool. If I have a child, you won’t notice that I had a child. Maybe you’ll see it when it’s 18, but I will keep it out of the spotlight.” Well, “it” is now officially a “he” and I guess Alexander John won’t be having playtime in public with Suri anytime soon. Now she has to look for another fashion playmate who is worthy of her company. Life is so unfair.
High society
When you’re already known for being a great beauty, like Nicole Kidman is, it’s easy to run out of ways to reiterate the greatness of your beauty — but one surefire way to do it is to play the role of one of the greatest beauties in the history of cinema. In what is surely a nod to that lovely mug of hers, Nicole has been tasked to play the role of Grace Kelly in Olivier Dahn’s Grace of Monaco. Fortunately, Nicole is as talented an actress as she is beautiful. The film also boasts a great supporting cast with Tim Roth, Parker Posey and Milo Ventimiglia. While the film is still slated for release in 2014, we can already hear the cries of Hollywood starlets fighting over a soon-to-be-made Audrey Hepburn biopic. Sorry, Katie, you just don’t have the acting chops for it. Maybe Suri when she grows up.
These days, everybody has a secret side job. If it earns you extra money on the side, why not? Heck, Regina George did car commercials in Japan when she was in high school (one time she met John Stamos on a plane — and he told her she was pretty). Kidding aside, we just found out that one of the designers for Hermés’ intricately detailed silk print scarves is Kermit Olivier who is not a world-famous artist, but a postal worker in his 60s from Waco, Texas. Um, random! Apparently he’s been painting for Hermés since the ‘80s and 16 of his designs have sold out. In spite of his success, Kermit has surprisingly chosen to keep his day job all these years instead of supporting his family with his art. According to the secret designer, who paints after his night shift at the post office, “That doesn’t interest me. Painting is just something I do.” Not that we completely understand his logic, but that’s art for you.
Getting the skinny
It’s something that we’ve suspected for a long time now, but we’ve never had any solid evidence until now. Balenciaga creative director Nicholas Ghesquière just went on record to say that he is known for his lean silhouettes for a reason — apparently the designer doesn’t cut his garments on fit models, but on really skinny models instead. Well, that’s unfair, and it looks like Nicholas is beginning to realize it too. “I had a tendency to think good cut and small size, but it should be a good cut in big sizes, too. That’s what I want to focus on — it’s the cut, not the sizing, and if people see they can wear something in a big size, then I did my job,” he says. Yes, Nicholas because heroin-chic is so ‘90s.
