Don't bug me about it

Lipstick lines that are responsibly carmine-free but may still contain animal-derived ingredients.

1. Body Shop Lily Cole

Hi-Shine Lip Treatment

Here’s another product from a model/actress turned eco-enterpreneur (models with a conscience are, apparently, very du jour). Body Shop’s recent collaboration with Lily Cole specifically plays up on the cruelty-free aspect of cosmetics, particularly makeup devoid of crushed bugs (carmine), animal hair or fish scales. The line’s Hi-Shine Lip Treatment is a bug shelle-free product that’s very sheer and sweet-smelling. The shine it gives is very subtle, the type that seems suited for teenage everyday wear, and the colors are very safe (pink, mauve and peach). The lip treatment does contain lanolin.

Available at Body Shop Stores nationwide

2. Human Nature Mineral

Hydrating Lipstick

Human Nature is probably the only locally-produced skincare and cosmetic company that doesn’t use carmine in its lipsticks. Though it uses beeswax as an emollient, the brand infuses cocoa butter, passion fruit seed oil (needless to say, it smells good) and sunflower oil to up the moisturizing and conditioning factor. The line only has four shades (for now) and in very sheer finishes.

Available at humanheartnature.com and Beauty Bar stores
