Bend it like Bowman

Trend setting: “They’re up-to-date with the trends, extremely affordable for people who want to be with what’s going on, what’s in,” says Josh Bowman on Penshoppe.

I suppose it’s easy to fall in love with a guy like Josh Bowman who plays Hamptons kid Daniel Grayson in the hit TV show Revenge. I mean, what’s not to love about him? A handsome face (made even more handsome by his charm and British accent), a great bod, a killer smile, and a laidback, easygoing personality that puts you right at ease (hello, he listens to Alt-J). In fact, talking to him is just like talking to a longtime pal, albeit, one who is known all over the world. Yes, the formerly clueless plaything of Emily Thorne who has now become a bit of a prude in the recent season of the hit show (his words!). Is it the point of no return for his character? (Well, we’ll always welcome your return to Manila, sir!).

As part of the top clothing brand’s summer campaign, Penshoppe recently flew in Mr. Bowman for a #PenshoppeHollywood party at nocturnal haunt Gramercy, and also, to do a series of interviews and check out his out-of-home presence spread across the metro. He even got down from the flyover to take a selfie with his EDSA billboard. Thankfully, Young STAR was able to get in on all the action.

YOUNG STAR: So Josh, what’s it like working on a show like Revenge? I mean there are plot twists and scandals in every episode.

JOSH BOWMAN: It’s fast-paced. Television is fast-paced. It doesn’t stop for anybody. As soon as a plot twist comes out, by the time you’ve read it, you’re already on set doing it. But it’s been better this season. It’s been very, very good. We’ve had time to actually work with it, learn the lines. We’ve been able to sleep on it, mull it over.

And your reaction when you read a script? I mean, it’s insane!

It is insane! I don’t know how they do it. With this show, 22 episodes, they keep stretching the story out. They prolong the actual drama, which is difficult. I don’t know how (the writers) do it. I couldn’t do it.

Besides your character, who’s your other favorite character in the show?

I gotta say, I keep saying Henry Czerny, who plays my father Conrad in the show. He’s just a phenomenal actor. He’s probably one of the better actors in the show. I’ve learned so much from him. This season, he’s turning into a bit of a prude, my character. I’ve tried to take as much as I can from him — his size, his breathiness, how he moves. He’s just really, really a smart, smart man. And a very funny guy at the same time.

I love his scenes with Victoria. Their banter is the best.

It’s amazing! It’s amazing. For me, that’s the focal point of the show. It also brings that sort of fight for dominance. They’re like a couple of lions.

What do you do when you’re not shooting in the Hamptons (although that’s not such a bad thing)?

I’ve been taking up golf. I’ve been doing that for a year and a half now. I’m obsessed with golf. I surf every now and then.

Where do you surf?

Malibu. Typical. Malibu has the best breaks. I’ve been working with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on a campaign called, “Hands Off My Parts” — basically investigating the illegal trade of rhino horns.

It’s summer on this side of the world and you guys are on break from filming. What are your summer plans?

Travel, travel, travel. We’re probably going to explore a little bit of Southeast Asia now that we’re here. There’re a couple of places we have in mind. I think I’m going to go home to London at some point in June — maybe go over to Europe. This job has given us an opportunity to travel and see the world. We don’t get too much time. Nine months we film, and we have two months off.

At least you’re here in the Philippines.

This is a great place to be in. I love Manila. I love it here. We were here last year and we went over to the Palawan islands which was just paradise. The sand, the white, white, white sand. I can’t.

What’s it like being a Penshoppe endorser?

It’s amazing! We’ve been driving around today looking at a couple of billboards and stores. It all goes very quickly but it’s a real pleasure and honor. I’m very, very thankful to be part of the brand.

What do you love about the brand?

They’re up-to-date with the trends. They’re competitive. And the clothes are extremely affordable for people who want to be in there with what’s going on, what’s in. I think Penshoppe is doing a great job of doing that. The chinos are great. The chambray shirt I have on is cool. The rucksacks and the hats are cool. I got to take a couple of things from the store today. Perfect for my vacation. Great stuff! It’s current and affordable which are two main things.

Bucket list while you’re here?

If Pacquiao fought here, that would be an amazing experience. Has he fought here ever?

Is he here? He’s probably in Sarangani right now. He’s a congressman.

Do you think he wears Penshoppe?

I think so.

(Jeff interjects: “I also told him that Pacquiao has an album.”)

He has an album! That’s funny. That would be cool to hear. I’m a big Manny Pacquiao fan. I’m a big boxing fan. I still want him to fight Mayweather. If you’re listening, or if you’re reading this, Manny, on the toilet…
