A wearable Dragon art for the Year of the Dragon

Jerome Lorico, Grand Prize Winner of the 48th Japan Fashion Design Competition

MANILA, Philippines - This year is Year 7 of The Philippine STAR and Swatch Annual Chinese New Year Art Competition. Since it is the Year of the Dragon, 2012’s competition is entitled “Enter the Dragon” T-shirt competition.

Swatch Tiger Art Contest first prize winner (2010), young fashion designer, outstanding artist and creative thinker Jerome Lorico, created a wearable dragon art with the use of a cotton T-shirt and cotton fabric. For this 2011 Ani ng Dangal awardee, his work reflects “the message of simplicity and being able to look into our own self without having to reference from other things.” He calls his dragon T-shirt “Ouroboros,” inspired by the Swatch New Gent Black Rebel. He further explains his creation:

“For both the Greeks and the Egyptians, the snake represented eternity. Ouroboros, the Greek symbol of eternity, consisted of a snake curled into a circle or hoop, biting its own tail. The Ouroboros grew out of the belief that serpents eat themselves and are reborn from themselves in an endless cycle of destruction and creation. Being part of this never-ending chain gives us the ability to grasp the reality that we sometimes tend to forget.

2010’s Chinese New Year Art Competition winner, Jerome Lorico, creates “Ouroboros” using a cotton tee and cotton fabric.

“The dragon depicted to be biting a part of the shirt is a reminder that we are part of this cycle. Every time we sink our teeth into reality is a sign that we are all alive and are part of the stages of life, death and regeneration.”
