MANILA, Philippines - Q. Isn’t too much sun bad for your hair? What’s the best way to protect it? I mean, are there hair sunblocks?

You know how overstyling is bad for your hair? Same goes in the summer, intense heat and sun can more than fry your hair to total fizziness. Yikes! A stylish hat is the most reliable prevention (and you’ll look extra fab on the beach to boot). Just compensate for the damage by deep conditioning after a full day on the beach.

Q. Why do you think big-bellied manongs always roll their shirts up over their stomachs?

There are two theories surrounding this social phenomenon.

One explanation lies in the science of physics. Bigger bellies generate more heat because of two reasons: first, they contain more fats and second, they have less surface area to dissipate the heat. Rolling up the shirt helps ventilate this area.

The second theory is grounded in social science. Like how peacocks display their plumage as a sign of affluence, males display their bellies as a sign of their capacity to feed potential mates and offspring. This behavior was embedded in the minds of men and has since been an involuntary action to display big bellies. Recently, there has been a big belly paradigm shift with the rise of Derek Ramsey’s popularity. This primitive behavior was embedded in the minds of men and has since been an involuntary action to display big bellies.
