A laugh with Isabel

Creativity is always manifested in our daily lives. This characteristic makes our nation distinct among our South East Asian neighbors. Proudly expressing ourselves through different mediums, I would like to point out that our great sense of humor is a big part of our Filipino moral fiber. During the launch exhibit of New York-based painter Isabel Diaz, the lightness and the humor of our people were manifested significantly in her paintings. I asked the audience at the exhibit questions about their imaginative inclinations.

Sap Uttam

In which of her paintings did you see most the Filipino character?

The paintings of the polo players, as it reminds me of Filipinos being sports-minded and ready to take on anything that life may dish out.

Tin Magsaysay

How would Isabel paint your present state of being?

It will be splashes of bright color since nothing is ever the same with me and life is always colorful state of being.

Andy Cruz

Where on EDSA should Isabel’s painting be displayed?

It will be at EDSA and Gil Puyat (formerly Buendia) because this the least decorated intersection of EDSA. I choose the floral artwork with the blue and green as dominant colors.

Sonny Zablan

Among the art works exhibited, which did you find most interesting?

The mural depicting urban landscape and seascape caught my attention. The optical art illusion of the mural created a multi-dimensional experience which art should be!

MInelli Bautista

Do you purchase artwork for investment purposes or for your collection?

I purchase art work both for the investments and collection purposes. It will be part of my collection between five to 10 years, then I’ll resell it after. It is also a practical solution when I need to give money to my kids.

Giselle Segovia

If you were given the opportunity to paint, what would your subject be?

I would paint a picture of Boracay’s sunset. The sunset in Boracay never ceases to amaze no matter how many times I have seen it, and that is a reason enough to have it immortalized in my painting.

Sharon Atillo

Are you willing to pose nude for a painting, and where would it be displayed?

Oh yes, I am willing to pose nude for a painting but it would be a self portrait. Then it will be displayed as a bill board on the stretch of EDSA particularly Kamuning, Guadalupe, Buendia and Taft. It will be the first traveling art exhibit concept in the country.

Barbie Pardo

Which part of your house would you hang Isabel’s painting?

I would hang it at the guest area so that I can show it off while entertaining them. I would choose the horse polo matches art work of Isabel’s because she was able to capture the horses’ movement in pastel colors which soften it.

Carlo Zaldarriaga

What color describes your boss?

The color that best describe my boss is blue – a true blooded Atenean which has the talent for communicating. He knows how to talk his way around.

Dan Lichauco

What makes an art work a classic?

The art work should reflect its name yet transcend its epoch while showing the genius and skill of the artist.
