MANILA, Philippines - Forgive me if this comes off as too predictable, but the easy chance (and excuse) to start again comes only once every 365 days. Don’t we all want that new beginning? I know I do. And apparently, so do five of my favorite style citizens. So here’s mine first to start the resolutions rolling. New year, no fashion fears!
Daryl’s fashion resolutions:
1. Shake my blog’s lethargic state off because it’s been sleeping for far too long. This is the year when stylesamurai.blogspot will have updates every other day.
2. Study and apply makeup techniques because I really can’t execute a decent smoky eye even if my life — or an event — depended on it.
3. Unearth more new innovators in fashion to feature, as well as to wear.
4. Spin my wardrobe wheel into an everyday sartorial jackpot. I’ve gotten so comfortable with certain favorites that I’ve stopped reaching in to make overlooked or unworn pieces go around. I’ll explore in my closet first and bring to light old-but-new pieces (with price tags still on!) before exploring the retail landscape again.
5. Wear. sunscreen.
Anna Canlas, fashion assistant of Preview:
1. Be more particular about laundry and clothing care instructions. I tend to run my wares right into the ground!
2. Shop from my closet more, instead of going shotgun on new purchases.
3. Continue to champion local designers — the PFW runway, as well as Preview’s Emerging Fashion Talent Awards, are always great places to spot new talent.
4. Strive to raise the flag of just-as-bananas Annas: Rihanna, Giovanna Battaglia, Anna dello Russo, and my best friend — and co-hubadera-pilot — Hannah Cruz.
5. Find a stylish boyfriend, God willing...
Pam Quiñones, stylist:
1. I will start wearing
fine jewelry every day.
2. I will go for quality over quantity.
3. Give platforms a rest and
stick to single-sole stilettos.
4. If it’s too trendy, do not buy it.
5. Organize my closet.
Vince UY, creative director of Preview, Cosmopolitan, Town & Country, and Esquire:
1. Avoid black. I can’t wait to wear more colors this year.
2. Buy more patterned socks. In the same way that shoes are statements, socks should be as well.
3. Come out of my comfort zone and explore new designers.
4. Have a different haircut and color.
5. Enough with slim, already, I want to try looser silhouettes.
Pauline Prieto, model:
1. Doll up tad bit more with some makeup when attending an event, while keeping it natural.
2. I want to try some innerwear as outerwear.
3. Since I’m planning to study abroad, I’m considering getting my hair ombred!
4. I also swear to make time to finally go to the gym.
5. I’ve been drooling over androgyny for years now and I’m hoping to rock it this coming 2012.
Mike Concepcion, social entrepreneur and creative director of Greater Good:
As opposed to resolutions, I propose these fashion solutions that people should be looking into this year:
1. White crew necks — they’re essentials. Mix in a good pair of denim, some nice oxfords, and you’re set.
2. I appreciate the effort put into the site mrporter.com. I suggest the occasional read in their online journal section and a peek at their extensive product selection.
3. It’s always nice to have a good pair of brogues in your wardrobe. I’ll be adding a few more to mine this year.
4. Raw denim jeans. The GAP 1969’s line has a few good pairs. Slim leg, nothing too tight. I only really use the one pair now.
5. Times Weekender/NATO watch straps. They’re cheap and a great everyday timepiece.
