MANILA, Philippines - Did you know that our Philippine terno was inspired by the French?
Find out more by watching "Sulyap sa Baro at Saya," an exhibit mounted by the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Home Economics(CHE) at the Bulwagan ng Dangal at Gonzalez Hall, UP Diliman.
The exhibition shows dresses from the collection initiated by Dr. Leonarda M. Jurado. Framing dress as science, technology and art, the exhbit revisits as well the history of the college and the development of Home Economics as a discipline.
Teodora Alonso, mother of our National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, after whom the CHE’s main building Alonso Hall was named, was among the inspirations of the exhibit as it reflects the multi-faceted lifestyles of Filipino women over the decades. In time for CHE’s observance of the 100th death anniversary of Teodora Alonso on Aug. 23, the collection will continue to go on display alongside paintings from the Vargas Museum and the CHE library as well as a sound piece designed by DJ Mark Zero.
The exhibition is curated by Prof. Tessa Maria Guazon a UPD CHE alumna and faculty of the Art Studies, Department of the College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman. CHE Dean Dr. Adelaida Villaraza-Mayo in coordination with OICA director, Prof. Ruben David Defeo, invites students as well as fashionistas to view the exhibit.
