The Zonta Club of Cebu 1 affiliates and focuses its goals alongside Zonta International’s mission while responding to local concerns. Through its combined service and advocacy, it has met the needs of women in all developmental levels to promote equality and enrichment of life.
To continue such laudable projects, financial resources are essential and fundraisers by the club are a regular activity. What better occasion than during the club’s 45th founding anniversary celebration to present a formal dinner for the survivors of typhoon Yolanda victims.
Civic leader and educator Mila Espina heeded the call and reprised her well-received Women Legends with the male version, Legends of Men, a musical diorama that was educational, humorous and most entertaining.
All performances were outstanding even if none of the 36 participants are professional actors. They cast members donated their time to portray famous and infamous men from the Bible, mythology, history, royalty, show business and other celebrities from the Philippines.
US Consular Agent John Domingo and Monica Orellano opened the program as Adam and Eve with John singing Beguine the Beguine. Singing Dr. Warfe Engracia as Jupiter, king of the gods had three goddesses with him, Amparito Lhuillier as Venus, Aida Uy as Roman goddess Diana and Yvette Vass as Athena, goddess of war.
Joe Ng, past president of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce, was perfect as Henry VIII, king of England and with him were Tess Chan as Anne Boleyn, Beverly Dayanan as Queen Elizabeth and Carol Ballesteros Go as Diana, Princess of Wales.
Prominent individuals included Edwin Castañeda as Jesus Christ, Charles Egama as, furniture designer Greg Huettel as US President John F Kennedy, top honcho of Cebu Holdings Inc. Francis Monera as Frank Sinatra, Fr. Vincent Ramon Jr. as George Hamilton, writer Sam Costanilla as Filipino flash boxer Nonito Donaire and Jessielito Moncada as Manny Pacquiao, Fr. Emmanuel Bolilia as ousted President Ferdinand Marcos, Jong Fernandez and Luy Jurado as Napoleon Bonaparte.
In as much as the evening was about men and by men, a few ladies portrayed cameo roles. They were Alice Woolbright as Paris Hilton, June Alegrado as Ava Gardner, Sheila Colmenares as Dovie Beams, Matt Baguia as Cory, Myrna Tan as Lady of Troy and Jazziejoy Mantilla as Mary Magdalene.
