Golf is a sport that I think almost everyone, at one point in their lives, will try to learn. I was always prodded by my parents, especially my dad, to try out the sport at a young age.
I refused!
I always believed that it was a sport you begin to learn when you get older. Much, much older.
When I finally did take up golf, in my late 20s, I realized just how challenging a sport it actually was, and I was so disappointed — no, angry, that I didn’t learn it sooner.
It turns out that among all the other sports I tried prior to golf — from football to basketball, to tennis, to bowling, to badminton, to softball, to American football, to beach volleyball, and even sailing — nothing came close to the level of difficulty of golf!
There are so many aspects to the game, from driving, to iron play, to the short game, and putting. It’s almost impossible to be able to come up with consistent play in all of them in a given round!
But the beauty of this game is that even up to your advanced age, you can still play and enjoy it!

It has become the source of many fund raisers, and one Lasallian group, led by Albert Garcia with Ting Yupangco, George Elazegui, Gene Garcia, Edmond Datuin, Roy Pena, Ben Jacinto, Bong Africa, George Elazegui, and Albert V. de los Santos, organized Brafe Golf, Golfing for Education, which has proven to be an effective tool to help deserving scholars.
The tournament, for the benefit of the Foundation for Sharing Lasallian Education (FSLE), was established in 1988 by the late Br. Rafael Donato with the help of his high school classmates in order to provide free Lasallian education. FSLE is currently headed by Caress Banson, niece of Br. Rafael.
It has now become a golfing tradition among Lasallians and their friends as they hold the annual golf tournament every first Monday of October, this year falling on the 5th, at the Malarayat Golf and Country Club in Lipa, Batangas.
As they look forward to their 10th tournament, Brafe Gold has raised over P5 million and they look forward to helping even more scholars to enable them to undertake undergraduate studies for the full four years at De La Salle Lipa.
