Must-have healthy meals for men

MANILA, Philippines – Focusing on the importance of men’s health, the recent cooking class of Doña Elena Cuisinera Club, a community made up of individuals who appreciate good food and put a premium on their health, recently featured the benefits of three delicious must-have healthy meals for men.

“Some of the most common male health problems affect men in their genitourinary system that includes the bladder, urethra, prostate gland, and the reproductive organs,” says Professor Luchie Callanta, senior lecturer from the University of the Philippines’ College of Home and Economics. “And most men suffering from these conditions usually divert their attention to things that preoccupy them such as work, religion, and sports.”

Making dishes not only irresistibly scrumptious but also healthy, the club’s resident chef Golda Laurel-Liamzon prepared delicious, health-friendly meals that included Chili con Care with Tacos, beer battered fish and chips, and whisky glazed porkchops.

Chili Con Care with Tacos, for instance, featured tomato salsa which is rich in lycopene — carotenoid pigment and phytochemical found in tomatoes — that helps reduce the risk of heart disease and memory loss. On the other hand, the beer battered fish has vitamins A, B2, C, and D, as well as riboflavin that helps the body metabolize amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates. Lastly, the whisky glazed porkchops were prepared to have 40-percent protein, an important nutrient for building muscles. All meals were made healthier and guaranteed to have 67-percent less saturated fat with the antioxidant-rich Doña Elena olive oil.

“Unlike regular cooking oils, which are rich in saturated fats, olive oil is abundant in monounsaturated fat, contains anti-inflammatory and anti-hypertensive properties; and has shown to lower the risk of coronary heart disease when partnered with an active lifestyle,” says Callanta, “Also, olive oil is rich in a potent antioxidant that scavenges harmful free radicals in the body called polyphenols.”
