All company-owned processing plants are certified to ISO 9001:2000 by external certifying bodies accredited by the Bureau of Product Standards of the Department of Trade & Industry and attached to UK or US standards. All other plants are in certifiable state as audited by trained San Miguel Corporation Quality Management System auditors. Since the start of the government’s search for the Best Poultry Processing Plant in 1995, majority of the regional and national winners in the “AAA” category have always been SMFI-owned or contracted plants.
SMFI plants were also the first in the Philippine poultry industry to be certified to HACCP and GMP/SSOP by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), and these plants have retained these accreditations every renewal period. Its multi-awarded San Fernando plant is the first poultry processing plant to be accredited for both systems and it is also the only poultry processing plant to-date to have been installed in the hall of fame for the Best Meat Establishment (Poultry Processing) and the only establishment to have won the Seal of Excellence as the Best Poultry Processing Plant for four years running. Aside from this, the plant has recently been ISO 22000-certified, signifying its compliance to Food and Safety Management Systems.
Corollary to the food safety system, San Miguel Foods Inc. implements a numeric product coding system for traceability. A product recovery system is also in place to ensure that the food safety management is implemented and working.
All plants observe a strict biosecurity policy to prevent contamination of food products. Visitors are screened to ensure potential carriers are properly quarantined prior to allowing entry into the facilities. Strict sanitation measures are also implemented to ensure that all tools, implements, and facilities are appropriate for food processing.
