Street style: Simply black

Is black the new white?

When I was younger, white spelled simplicity.

These days, it seems to be black.

In the ’80s, we wore black from head to toe, to stand out from all the preppy folks in Lacoste/Ralph Lauren shirts and Sperry Top-Siders.

Now black is worn to blend in.

I stopped wearing black for a while when it became mainstream. But of course I went back. These days I’m more likely to look at a garment or accessory if it’s in black.

Black hides flaws and problem areas and stains.

And as my roommate in New York used to say, "When you go black, you never go back."
