‘Less is more’ is the rule for office makeup

Dear Lucy,

I work in a big firm in Makati and we’re always expected to look well-groomed. I believe that makeup is very much a part of grooming. I notice that some of the girls in my office apply very heavy eye shadow (black and dark blue), which often makes them look as if somebody just gave them a black eye. Is dark, heavy makeup appropriate for office work? What are the "in" shades of eye shadow today and where does one wear each of them?

Makati Girl

Yes, Makati Girl, makeup can serve to make women look prettier and more "put-together" – that is, provided it is applied tastefully. Very heavy eye shadow is appropriate for a night out, not within the confines of the workplace. I believe that "less is more" should be the rule of thumb for office makeup. Strive to enhance your features, not paint over them.

I likewise do not believe in being dictated by what the in shades are. Makeup is a very personal thing – even if a particular color is the current must-have, if it does not suit you, why use it?  Fool-proof eye shadow colors you can invest in for office makeup are basic white and brown.  Use the white or bone-colored eye shadow as a base to open up your eyes and the brown to define the creases or accent the sides, whichever looks better depending on the shape of your eyes.  It is a simple duo that always works.  You simply have to determine the right shade of brown based on your skin tone. Finish off the look by curling your lashes, and with a sweep of eyeliner (you can smudge it for a softer effect) and at least a coat of mascara.

The Secrets To Lustrous, Thick Hair
Hi Tingting!

I’m 45, a single female with thinning hair. I would like to consult a hair specialist, but I can’t due to financial constraints.

I admire your lustrous, long, thick hair – it makes you look so young. What shampoo and conditioner do you use to keep your hair looking good and thick? And where can I buy these products? I heard about the horse shampoo that Mikee uses. Is it really good?

Ms. Thin Hair

Honestly, I use Sunsilk, L’Oreal and the horse shampoo Mane ’n Tail. I use even anything my kids discard or have an abundance of. I also use Suave hair tonic every day.

The horse shampoo is available at the veterinary clinic of Dr. Modomo with tel. nos. 899-0056 and 897-1051. The other two products I use are available in supermarkets and beauty shops.

To Botox Or Not To Botox
Dear Mary,

I’m a housewife in Cebu whose husband is quite prominent in our community. I always have to look my best because my husband and I meet with a lot of people and do a lot of entertaining. My problem is my wrinkles are starting to show. Some of the ladies I lunch with have had botox. Is botox effective?

Wrinkling Lady

Botox is injected into the creases between your brows. It paralyzes the area so that it will not crease. These injections have passed FDA tests in America.

I do not know if the plastic surgeons in Cebu are already doing this. But here in Manila, there are many doctors offering botox. The only problem is that it must be repeated every three or four months, which makes it expensive in the long run (price per treatment starts at, more or less, P350 per unit and up).
