Skyscanner reveals the future of travel

MANILA, Philippines - Will we experience our future holiday from our sofa? Will robots make our holiday bookings?  Will space replace Spain as our favourite destination?

Global travel site Skyscanner has the answer to these questions and many more with the launch of their detailed report on the Future of Travel 2024.

The first section of the report looks at how the planning and booking of travel is set to change over the next 10 years.  It introduces readers to The Digital Travel Buddy, a virtual companion, which uses artificial intelligence to accurately suggest and book suitable trips for the traveler of the millennium (TOM).

The future, according to Skyscanner, will see wearable technology evolve from the recently launched Google Glass to a mobile device so small that it will fit onto a contact lens and can provide immediate translations, breaking down language barriers and the need to learn the holiday lingo.

Section one of the report also follows TOM as he engages with virtual reality.  Rather than replacing holidays, the Skyscanner report forecasts that virtual reality will offer holidaymakers the opportunity to “try before they buy,” allowing them to see the sights, hear the sounds, and even feel the landscape of a destination. The report is the result of in-depth research and a series of interviews with experts in their field including tech companies, travel futurologists and Skyscanner’s co-founder and CEO Gareth Williams.

Commenting on the report, Skyscanner’s Mary Porter says, “Trying to predict the future of travel is fascinating.  With so many emerging technologies it is mind-boggling to imagine just what their impact on travel could be.  This report is a great sneak peek into the future and Skyscanner’s view of what we think holidaymakers are likely to experience over the next 10 years.”
