MANILA, Philippines - Thirty-two years ago, in 1984, the Museum of Philippine Art (MOPA) exhibited 400 of Juvenal Sanso’s works about water in a show titled “Hymn to Water.” This year, on the occasion of Sanso’s seven decades in art, Fundacion Sanso revisits this same theme but with an expanded collection in a show titled “Elogio del Agua,” which opens on Jan. 28, at 6 p.m., and will run until Oct. 1.
It will be the first of seven important museum shows making 2016 a retrospective Year of Sanso. Other museum shows will include shows at the soon to open Kalaw-Ledesma foundation, the Ateneo Art Gallery, the Ayala Museum, the Lopez Museum, the Vargas Museum and a second show for the end of the year at the Fundacion Sanso.
Sanso has won critical acclaim all over the world during his illustrious career but among the most he cherishes are the awards given to him by the three countries that he has considered home. These are: The Distinguished King’s Cross of Isabela which was awarded to Sanso by the Spanish King Juan Carlos on Jan. 8, 2007, the Chevalier de l’Order des Arts et des Lettres conferred on him on Feb. 26, 2008 by the Ministry of Culture and Communications of the Republic of France, and the Presidential Medal of Merit given to him by a grateful Republic of the Philippines on May 20, 2006.
