Gallery News: Kiri Dalena at 1335 Mabini

“Distant Out, Einstein In” by Cezar Arro

MANILA, Philippines - Kiri Dalena showcases new works grounded upon the fundamental premise of Erased Slogans, the constant struggle in upholding human rights amid state suppression, in “Recent Slogans,” which opens on Aug. 16 at 1335 Mabini, 1335 Mabini St., Ermita, Manila. The show runs until Oct. 17.

“Erased Slogans are archival photographs that I have altered digitally. These photographs of mass mobilizations were collected from the tumultuous period before the declaration of martial law by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1972. The idea singlehandedly erasing every word of protest found on the placards began as a demonstration of how the hand of the artist can be complicit in the production of historical amnesia,” explains Dalena.

Dalena will also present pieces confronting the country’s current state of affairs.
