MANILA, Philippines - Noted American sopranos, Helen Lyons and Nicole Birkland, together with prominent Filipino tenor Leodigario “Gary” del Rosario and baritone Andrew Fernando are guest soloists for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s seventh concert series slated on March 18, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) at 8 p.m. Other performers include the Philippine Madrigal Singers, the Ateneo Chamber Singers and the AUP Ambassador Singers. Maestro Olivier Ochanine conducts.
The PPO’s concert features two opera works by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi: Nabucco, Verdi’s first successful opera which includes the chorus “Va, pensiero,” the unofficial second national anthem of Italy. The work is presented in celebration of the 150-year anniversary of Italy’s unification. The second part of the program is the magnificent and monumental “Requiem.”
