Angel Aquino: Constantly evolving

It’s hard to believe that it’s been all of 13 years since Angel Aquino first graced our collective consciousness. "In 1993, I started out as a model in print and it didn’t take too long for me to go into commercial modeling from there. Show business happened to me in 1997 when (director) Butch Perez saw photographs of me taken by Neal Oshima and decided to cast me in a movie entitled Mumbaki. It all just steam-rolled from there," she reveals.

Steam roll indeed. Angel can be seen in almost any form of media today. Print ads with her likeness adorn the streets and malls of Metro Manila and other progressive cities. She’s starred in a number of movies (in fact, another one in which she plays a cancer victim is coming very soon), and despite the demise of her long-time lifestyle television show F, she’s still very much a part of the replacement show called Us Girls. How did Angel become so visible in such diverse mediums? The answer, predictably, is quite simple. Angel, the perfectionist that she is, has never really become completely satisfied with what she’s done despite all her achievements. And she has many.

"In terms of modeling, I am quite proud that I have gained my colleagues’ respect. I think people respect all the effort that I put into the craft. I tried to learn everything that I could about modeling and I have been very professional about it. So as far as that aspect of my work is concerned, maybe you could say that I am quite satisfied. But that’s only part of what I do," she shares. "Where hosting and acting are concerned, I’ve still to get to the point where I’m as confident that I’m at the level of the better hosts and actresses of today. I’m working on it, though!"

Here’s the denouement. She’s working on it, she wants to succeed as a model, actress and television host because she’s driven by her desire to become the best mother that she can ever be. Angel has two daughters Iana, 12 and Thea, 10 – and all this work revolves around her need to provide for them and to raise them to become good, responsible people.

"With all the multi-tasking I do, I’m sure I fall short in one or two of the roles that I have to play. Which is why I’m glad that I have two very understanding daughters and one very helpful mother. However, I still would like to be able to tweak the way I handle all my roles so I can concentrate on what to me is more important now – and that is my children. You could say I want to become better for the betterment of my children. It’s true what they say – that you appreciate your own mother once you become a mother yourself. I see that now. I hope my children do, too, someday," she smiles.

Until that time, we’ll happily watch as Angel continuously evolves – in print, on TV and on the big screen.
