MANILA, Philippines — Jukebox King of the Philippines Victor Wood, died yesterday. He was 75.
Wood’s sister, Maria Testado, confirmed the OPM icon’s death in a?Facebook post.?
“Your memories will remain in our hearts and our minds forever. May your soul rest in peace with the Lord in heaven,” she said.
A report on ABS-CBN said the singer died in a hospital in Quezon City due to complications from COVID-19.
Born in Camarines Sur, Wood gained prominence in the 1970s with hits such as “In Despair,” “I’m Sorry my Love,” “The Voice of Love,” “Little Darlin” and “I Went to Your Wedding.”
In his later years he focused on painting, but in his heyday as a singer he was in a neck and neck battle with Eddie Peregrina for the most number of hit singles getting plays on the jukebox, a fixture in beer gardens and similar dives.
