MANILA, Philippines — Almost all Filipinos feel proud when the country does well in international sporting events, according to the third quarter survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS).
The survey, conducted from Sept. 27 to 30 with the results released on Thursday, showed that 95 percent of Filipinos feel proud when the country’s athletes do well in sporting competitions.
This is higher that the 93 percent obtained in a similar survey conducted in 2008.
The survey, released a day after the closing of the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games, showed that 79 percent of the respondents said they feel “very proud” when the country does well in international sporting events.
Seventeen percent said they feel “somewhat proud,” while only three percent said they do not feel proud.
SWS said the number of those who are “very proud” of the Philippines’ achievements in international sports are high across all demographics.
Four in five in Metro Manila (84 percent) and the rest of Luzon (81 percent) are “very proud” of the country’s achievements in sports, slightly higher than the 77 percent in the Visayas and 72 percent in Mindanao.
Eighty-one percent of Filipino males are “very proud” of the country’s achievements in international sports, slightly higher than the 76 percent among females.
Citing data from the International Social Survey Program, SWS said that the Philippines’ achievements in sports is the top source of pride among Filipinos, along with the country’s history and achievements in arts and literature.
The third quarter survey had 1,800 adult respondents with an error margin of +/- 2.3 percent for national percentages.
