MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago was rushed to the hospital by ambulance on Monday evening, according to a statement released by her staff.
The senator's husband Narciso "Jun" Santiago on Wednesday announced that she is sick and suffering complications.
"He said that visitors are not allowed and that gifts will not be accepted, such as flowers and other bloom," the statement read.
Defensor-Santiago was transferred from her private room at the Makati Medical Center to the Intensive Care Unit.
"Jun said that Miriam is bearing well with her trademark sense of humor," the statement said.
The senator said that she thanks all those who prayed for her recovery and sent their well-wishes on social networking site Facebook.
Defensor-Santiago, who ranked fifth in the 2016 presidential race, earlier said that she will continue the remaining days of her term in the Senate on medical leave for cancer. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
