MANILA, Philippines – For the last time during his term, President Benigno Aquino III will lead the commemoration rites for the 119th death anniversary and martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal on Wednesday.
Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Aquino would preside over the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies in honor of the country's national hero at the Luneta Park in Manila.
“On Wednesday, for the last time during his term, President Aquino will lead the flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the death anniversary of our national hero, Jose Rizal,” Lacierda said.
Lacierda noted that Aquino never missed presiding the ceremonies during his administration.
“This year, he will continue his tradition of recognizing Rizal's achievements, which serve as inspiration to all Filipinos to aspire for excellence, driven by love for country,” Lacierda said.
Under Proclamation No. 931, Aquino declared December 30 as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Rizal Day. This is in pursuant of Executive Order No. 292 or the Administrative Code of 1987.
