MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV on Monday explained why he only seeks the vice presidency and not the highest national post in the country.
Trillanes said based on his consultations and rounds before deciding for his vice presidential bid, he is not yet capable of initiating a presidential campaign.
"Dahil nandodoon na rin 'yun sa ating limitasyon, sa ating capability to launch a national campaign for president ay talagang wala po tayong capability at this time," Trillanes said in a radio interview with dzMM.
The senator also welcomed the fact that most vice presidential candidates hail from Bicol region where he also come from.
"At least ang odds na magkakaroon ng Bicolano vice president ay malaki. At that way ay mas mabibigyan na ng atensyon ang Bicol region na alam nating sinasalanta ng mga kalamidad every year," Trillanes said.
Trillanes will file his certificate of candidacy for vice president on Wednesday morning according to his media advisory.
He will join the vice presidential derby against co-Nacionalista Party members Sens. Alan Peter Cayetano, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos and other candidates from Bicol, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Maria Leonora “Leni” Robredo. An addition to the vice presidential race is Sen. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan.
