MANILA, Philippines - Some five million registered voters without biometrics may not be able to vote in 2016.
In a post on his Twitter account @jabjimenez, spokesman James Jimenez said the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has incomplete or no biometrics data of some 5.02 million voters.
“The #NoBioNoBoto campaign is gaining ground,” read the Twitter post.
“From nine million at the start of #VoterReg2014, now at 5.02 million people with incomplete or no biometrics.”
Biometrics data refer to the digital picture, signatures and fingerprints of voters taken by the Comelec.
Under Republic Act 10367, the Mandatory Biometrics Voter Registration Act of 2013, registered voters with no biometrics will be deactivated for the succeeding elections, and therefore unable to vote.
The Comelec opened voter’s registration for the 2016 polls last May and it will run until Oct. 30, 2015.
