MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Three people, including a jail guard, were killed, while eight others were wounded in an attempted jail break in southern Philippines last night, local police said today.
A detainee at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology facility in Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, allegedly grabbed the firearm of a jail officer who was escorting another detainee back to the cell and shot him dead at around 8:00 p.m., Zamboanga Regional Police Office said.
The Siocon Police and troops from the Philippine Army responded to the incident and a shootout occurred resulting to the death of two detainees, both with murder case.
A police, two jail officers and three detainees were wounded in the incident, while another cop and a detainee were hit by splinters.
All wounded victims were brought to Siocon District Hospital for medical treatment, Zamboanga police said, adding that investigation into the incident has been ongoing.
