MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The Philippine government today said it "welcomes and supports" the adoption of United Nations sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in response to the nuclear test it conducted last month.
The Philippines said DPRK should abandon its nuclear weapons program in a "complete, verifiable and irreversible manner."
Manila also urged it to act as a responsible member of the international community as it expressed its deep concern on the recent announcement by DPRK that it is voiding all non-aggression agreements with South Korea.
The announcement, Manila said, raises tensions in the Korean Peninsula which threaten regional peace and stability.
Instability in the Korean Peninsula has long worried the Philippines due to the large presence of Filipino workers in the region. There are about 50,000 Filipinos in South Korea and at least 116,000 in neighboring Japan.
The UN Security Council Thursday unanimously adopted No. 2094 resolution to impose additional sanctions on DPRK in response to latter's Feb. 12 announcement of a nuclear test.
